Surface Preparation Technologies, LLC (SPT) was founded in 1988 by H. Matthew Johnson, Shawn M. Gallagher, and William A. Newhart. SPT started its business by offering shotblasting services to road and bridge builders as well as commercial building constructors. Coming from business backgrounds in highway safety, all three company founders became interested in a new concept being developed by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission in 1990 called the shoulder rumble strip.
In 1992 SPT was granted their first patent on our NoisePrint mill designed and built specifically for the installation of rumble strips. We used NoisePrint to construct the original rumble strip projects in many states that lead the way in proving that rumble strips were the definitive solution to run-off-the-road crashes.
Armed with a unique product that was proving to be as important as line painting on roads, SPT set out to promote the rumble strips to Department of Transportation offices throughout the country. Currently all 50 states, the Canadian Provinces and several countries overseas are successfully using rumble strips as a result of these efforts.
SPT is an industry leader in our markets. Since 1988, we have shotblasted more than 25,000,000 square feet of concrete surfaces and installed over 150,000 miles of rumble strips. Our success has enabled us to invest in and develop state-of-the-art equipment. We continue to develop new generations of mills, which have allowed us to increase production twenty-fold and reduce costs by 96% in the last decade. Our equipment coupled with the vast experience of our employees is the basis for our productivity and reliability. SPT currently maintains bases of operation in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Colorado, Tennessee, Kansas, South Carolina, South Dakota and Utah to best serve our nationwide market.
